Veeam Cloud Connect Case Study

HostedBizz provided a single vendor solution including licensing, storage, deployment and monitoring. The solution was up and running within a few hours.

The Municipality of North Perth, 100 kms West of Toronto, is responsible for the management and maintenance of municipal services for the region including everything from emergency services, garbage, recycling, elections and libraries.

The Municipality of North Perth has a responsibility to safely secure, store and archive the data associated with resident services. The Municipaility was facing several challenges as part of its backup processes.

Existing backup solutions were unreliable and inconsistent which left sensitive data vulnerable. For additional protection they needed to ensure that they had a copy of their data offsite. Another challenge was the Municipality faced was to find a way to complete off-site DR backups with a 10/2 Mbps ADSL internet connection. They also wanted the process totally monitored and managed and they had a target Restore Time Objective (RTO) of less than 4 hours, meaning that in the event of a data loss event or a disaster they needed to restore critical IT operations within 4 hours.

To better understand the needs of the Municipality, HostedBizz completed a technical discovery of the customer’s IT environment to verify that everything was in good working order and could support cloud backups. The internet connection speed was assessed to ensure that it could support the differential size of the offsite backups and RTO and RPO requirements were defined.

Once the offsite backup process was set up, the initial encrypted copy was seeded onto a portable drive due to the limitations in bandwidth.

Once seeded within the HostedBizz Data Center, backup settings were implemented in line with the Municipality’s choice for backup scheduling, reporting, retention, encryption, selection of VMs and data compression settings. Once the options were selected backups were set to run automatically.
HostedBizz monitor the status of each backup and backup copy job to ensure all is running smoothly.

The on-premise backups serve as the primary restoration repository in case of accidental deletion of a file/folder/email, corrupted files, or individual VM failures.

The Veeam Cloud Connect repository in the HostedBizz Cloud provides North Perth with the ability to completely fail over to a cloud server infrastructure in the event of a disaster, protects them from Ransomware/Cryptolocker attacks as well as providing them with a “Sandbox” where they can restore VMs, complete application updates and test new software in a non-production environment.

The resiliency and redundancy of the solution leaves the Municipality of North Perth with complete peace of mind that they will NOT lose any data and they can restore the production environment to the cloud in the event of a major disaster or outage.
